Highlights

Day Trip to Sintra

Sintra (30 minutes from Lisbon) is one of the most enchanting places on earth! It is home to several castles, each surrounded by magnificent gardens.

My favourite castles:

  • Monserrate Palace (pictured)
  • Pena Palace
  • Queluz National Palace
  • Quinta de Regaleira

Jeronimos Monastery

This is one of those sites that you just walk around in, but Jeronimos Monastery is a stunning architectural feat.

It is situated near Belem Tower (where some of Game of Thrones was filmed) and a few great spots to get pasteis de nata, such as Pastéis de Belém (below).

Pastéis de Belém

You can’t go to Lisbon without having a pastel de nata! One of the most famous spots for pasteis de nata is Pastéis de Belém, which began making the delicacies in 1837 following a recipe from Jeronimos Monastery.

Where to Stay

The InterContinental Lisbon

1R. Castilho 149, 1070-050 Lisboa, Portugal

We absolutely loved this hotel (affordable, but giving LUXURY). The rooms are very spacious, with a desk, lounge area and Byredo products in the bathroom.

Where to Eat

Breakfast at Dear Breakfast (Bica location)

This is an amazing brunch spot hidden in a small side street. Lots of colorful beverages and delicious breakfast foods. I even got a few of these tea cups to go.

Dinner at JNCQuoi Asia

This is a fantastic Asian fusion dinner spot in Lisbon! The food was extremely flavorful and the service was excellent.

Dinner/Drinks at SEEN Skybar

Definitely need reservations for this one! We didn’t have reservations, so did not make it to the skybar.

Travel Tips

  • Uber between locations in Sintra. It is 1000% worth it to Uber or take a taxi between castles in Sintra. Sintra is quite hilly and the castles are too far from each other to comfortably walk. There is a bus, but I heard it is unreliable and decided to skip it. Ubers are under $10/per ride between sites (as of 2023).
  • January and February are FANTASTIC times to visit. While it may be a little rainy if you visit between January and February, you will beat the crowds and get to enjoy each site virtually unbothered. I got the best pictures in front of castles during this period (even though we did have to deal with a bit of rain).
